Which fruits to store on the counter and which in the refrigerator
Enjoy their taste to the fullest
Proper storage of fruits plays an important role not only in their durability, but also in preserving their taste and nutritional value. We often act on inertia - we put everything in the refrigerator, thinking that this way the products will last longer. But the truth is that some types of fruits do not like low temperatures and lose their aroma, while others spoil quickly if left at room temperature. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and grapes are among the fruits that are best stored in the refrigerator.
They are delicate, have a high water content and easily develop mold. Keeping them cool will slow down this process. However, it is good to wash them immediately before consumption, not beforehand, as moisture accelerates spoilage. Apples and pears can also be kept in the refrigerator, especially if you don't plan on eating them soon, because this way they stay crisp longer.
Bananas definitely don't tolerate low temperatures. When stored in the refrigerator, their skin darkens quickly and the taste changes. Mangoes, pineapples, avocados and papayas should also ripen at room temperature and only then, if necessary, be refrigerated for a short time.
Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and tangerines can sit on the kitchen counter for a few days, but if you are going to store them for longer, it is a good idea to put them in the refrigerator drawers. Stone fruits - peaches, nectarines, plums - also feel better when ripened outside the refrigerator. The cold stops the ripening process and can make them have a crumbly texture. Once they soften and gain their full flavor, cool them slightly before serving if you want them to be more refreshing.
Watermelon and cantaloupe, if whole, are best stored at room temperature. However, after cutting, they must be covered and placed in a cold place. Knowing how to distribute fruit between the refrigerator and the counter at home not only prolongs their freshness, but also helps us enjoy their full aroma and taste. A small change in habits in this direction can even contribute to reducing food waste.
